| Resumo | The Amazon biome is the bigger Brazilian one in terms of area and has the largest continuous canopy of tropical rainforest. Featuring a complex network of environmental services still poorly investigated and measured, the Amazon biome has the lowest human development indices and the highest deforestation rates in Brazil. Since 1988, the Federal Government has heavily invested to curb the process of eradication of natural systems and implement actions and public policies in order to reduce the deforestation rates in the Amazon. Aiming to identify the main drivers of the deforestation in the Guamá River watershed, Pará State, this study evaluated the land use and cover change (LUCC) between 2004 and 2014. As a result, it was verified that during the studied period, approximately 20% of the area presented some LUCC transition, and 45% of them were related to new deforestation processes. The analysis of LUCC in these areas showed that 63% of them were used for pasture and only 4% for annual crops. Therefore, in the Guamá River watershed, pastures constitute the main land use class to occupy the new deforested areas, corroborating other studies carried out in the State of Pará. Nevertheless, it is premature to say that the expansion of cattle ranching is the main deforestation driver. Certainly, other reasons were associated with deforestation phenomena, such as selective logging and land speculation. |
